Karamoja Cultural Festival 2026
The Karamoja Cultural Festival returns from September 6–12, 2026, this year hosted in Moroto District.
A voluntary, community-led celebration, the festival brings together indigenous Ateker communities from northeastern Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan, and Ethiopia to honor and preserve the region’s rich cultural heritage, with host duties rotating annually among Karamoja’s districts.
Over six days, visitors can take in traditional forums where elders and youth discuss peace, development, and environmental preservation; daily cultural performances, including the striking high-jumping Edonga dance; exhibition markets showcasing authentic beadwork and handmade artifacts; and hands-on encounters with indigenous culinary traditions. It’s a rare, ethical window into the customs of Uganda’s least-traveled sub-region – an invitation for travelers seeking adventure, heritage, and genuine community connection.
