About the Park

Established in 1952 as Kazinga National Park, it was renamed two years later to honor a visit by Queen Elizabeth II. The park is located in western Uganda and covers an area of approximately 1,978 square kilometers. Its diverse ecosystems range from sprawling savannas and shady forests to sparkling lakes and fertile wetlands, making it an ideal habitat for a wide variety of wildlife.

 

Queen Elizabeth National Park is home to:

  • Over 95 mammal species, including the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, leopards, buffalo, elephants, and hippos.
  • More than 600 bird species, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise.
  • Ten primate species, including chimpanzees, which can be tracked in the Kyambura Gorge.

The park’s dramatic landscape is set against the majestic backdrop of the Rwenzori Mountains. Visitors can explore enormous craters carved into rolling green hills, enjoy panoramic views of the Kazinga Channel with its teeming wildlife, or venture into the endless plains of Ishasha, where fig trees hide lions ready to pounce on Uganda kobs.

How to Get to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Located about 410km (255mi) west of Kampala, the park is a 7 to 8-hour drive from the capital. Many travelers prefer to include stops at other parks along the way as part of their itinerary. For those seeking a quicker option, scheduled and chartered flights are available from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to airstrips in Kasese, Mweya, or Kihihi (for access to Ishasha).

 

Most travelers will arrive in Uganda via Entebbe International Airport, situated 46km (29mi) from Kampala. Your tour operator will arrange airport transfers and any other transportation needed for your safari, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience.
