A visit to Kampala, Uganda’s bustling capital, is not complete without experiencing its vibrant nightlife. Kampala’s after-dark scene ranges from traditional dance performances, live music and theatre to a cosmopolitan choice of cuisines from across Africa and all around the world. International quality Ugandan beers and creative cocktails are the launch point for some late nights – and early mornings – in the party capital of East Africa!
Authentic and diverse – uniquely Ugandan!
Kampala’s nightlife stands out for its authenticity and diversity. Unlike cities where commercialized venues dominate, Kampala blends local hangouts with tourist-friendly spots. Whether you’re dancing in a club or enjoying a drink at a local neighbourhood bar, Kampala’s nightlife exudes an infectious enthusiasm for life.
Affordable and friendly – with something for everyone
There’s a night out for every budget in Kampala. From upscale bars in five-star hotels to open-air restaurants serving Ugandan beers and spirits and barbecued meat, Kampala caters to all tastes and pockets. Whether you’re sipping cocktails at a rooftop lounge or grabbing a rolex (a popular street food) on the go, Kampala’s nightlife promises a welcoming atmosphere. You’ll quickly make new friends.
Where to start your night out in Kampala
For those new to Kampala, kick-start your evening at the Ndere Cultural Centre. Immerse yourself in Uganda’s diverse cultures through traditional dance performances. Each tells a unique cultural story, through the energetic Kiganda dance of the Baganda, the graceful Rwanda dance of the Banyarwanda or the ostrich feather headdresses of the Acholi dance from northern Uganda.
Looking for a cozy spot to unwind? The Bistro in Kisementi offers a relaxed ambiance and delicious cocktails, making it an ideal starting point for your night out. Or head to The Lawns in Kololo for tapas, game meat and panoramic views across the golf course. It’s impossible to list Kampala’s food scene in just one article but choose from: five-star hotel restaurants, Japanese, Mexican, Italian, French and West African restaurants. Authentic Indian cuisine, wood fired oven pizzas and the traditional luwombo dish are some of the endless choices of cuisine available across the city.
Kampala’s nightlife hotspots
When it comes to bars and nightclubs, Kampala doesn’t disappoint. Alchemist Bar in Bugolobi is a trendy hotspot that attracts a diverse crowd of young professionals. Guvnor in the Industrial Area offers upscale ambiance and top-notch DJs spinning Afrobeat and international hits.
New bars and restaurants pop up all the time across the city. Popular areas include: Acacia Avenue in Kololo, Kisementi Square, Luthuli Avenue in Bugolobi and the Industrial Area and Kabalagala (for nightclubs).
When to go out
In Kampala, bars and restaurants typically get busy around 7 or 8 PM, while nightclubs come alive after 11 PM and stay open until dawn.
Tips for a safe night out in Kampala
- While Kampala’s nightlife is generally safe, be mindful of your belongings, and consider using taxis and ride-hailing apps like Uber, Bolt and SafeCar (SafeBoda app) to get around. We don’t recommend using unlicensed boda bodas (motorbikes).
- Few drivers accept credit cards so you’ll find it easiest to pay with cash or load money onto a local SIM card.
- Free Wi-Fi is available in most venues, making transport easy to arrange.
- If you prefer having your own driver, one of Uganda Tourism Board’s registered tour operators can help provide drivers to take you around the city, day and night.
Eat, drink or dance. Whatever your vibe, a night out in Kampala guarantees an unforgettable adventure.
